Friendly Neighbors
Bringing neighborhood volunteers and seniors together
"Number one, you have to be a good listener to be able to draw them out. They need to talk about things. I'm just hoping I can help . . . and I think I do."

Friendly Neighbors was established in 1986, in response to the growth in the state’s senior population. Having a “social support system” for seniors delays the need for expensive care in assisted living facilities and enhances their quality of life.
The Social Connection: We recruit, train, and coordinate the work of community volunteers—uniting seniors with compassionate volunteers who match the seniors’ special needs and interests.
The Educational Opportunities: The program also serves as a learning center for students interested in geriatric care, including Nursing and Social Work, and other student volunteers from Hawaii Pacific University, University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, and elsewhere.
Volunteer services offered can involve:
• paying friendly visits
• escorting clients to the doctor
• preparing meals or doing light housework
• picking up prescriptions
• reading letters to visually impaired clients
• providing phone call reassurance
• monitoring blood pressure and other medical assistance
• allowing respite for regular caregivers
Friendly Neighbors is available to anyone age 60 and over who lives in Waikiki and is seeking assistance or companionship.
