Offering one of the most comprehensive HIV programs in Hawaii
“On Oahu, there are only seven HIV specialists: Two are at Waikiki Health Center”
--Bryan Talisayan, Program Director - HIV/STD Services
“We’re fortunate to have two credentialed HIV specialists on staff who can provide the highest quality care,” Bryan Talisayan, HIV/STD Services program director, says – referring to the Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Elliot Kalauawa, and physician assistant, Kellie Cosseboom.
Kalauawa and Cosseboom are among only about 1700 health care providers nationally who have earned the designation of HIV Specialist™ by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
The Center offers one of the most comprehensive HIV programs in Hawaii. The range of services includes:
Free, Anonymous Testing – We offer on-site testing and counseling in a safe and comfortable environment by certified counselors.
Primary Care – We provide physical exams, diagnosis, and treatment. Early detection and treatment of HIV can help prevent the onset of AIDS and opportunistic infections.
Dental Care – We help uninsured people with HIV access low-cost dental programs offering cleaning, exams, and treatment.
Medication Counseling – Our HIV patients can get help managing medication schedules, coping with or reducing medication side effects, and clarifying expectations about medications’ intended benefits.
Nutrition Counseling – Our registered dietician helps people with HIV learn about the foods that are best for them, what to eat and when, and how dietary supplements can be of help.
“HIV is not the death sentence it used to be,” Talisayan says. People are “accessing primary care services early, so many people are living a lot longer. A person can have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and live 15 to 20 years before getting sick.”
